Sights in the Black Forest

Suggested excursions during your holiday in the Black Forest

The location of the Ludinmühle Hotel & Spa in picturesque Brettental is ideal for excursions to the Black Forest and the surrounding regions. We particularly recommend the following highlights:

Freiburg

The sunniest town in Germany is situated on the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland and makes a particularly good day trip. The old town with its Gothic minster and colourful market is well worth a visit. Its charming little lanes and picturesque nooks are especially attractive for lovers looking to explore the town on their holiday at our romantic hotel in the Black Forest.  For anyone wanting to experience a unique guided tour of Freiburg, the Historix Tours led by professional actors are highly recommended.

We provide a hotel shuttle bus to the beautiful old town of Freiburg every Tuesday – you will find more information on this at the hotel reception.

Tip:
Visit Freiburg's local mountain – the Schauinsland – which has the longest cable car in the world, carrying you 1,284 metres up to the top in 20 minutes, from where you have a stupendous view of the Black Forest and the natural beauty all around.

Strasbourg

Nearby Alsace is worth a visit at any time of year. As home to the European Court of Justice and the European Parliament, it stands at the centre of European politics. Stroll through the historical old town and visit the minster with its astronomical clock. Strasbourg’s outstanding Alsatian cuisine is another reason for visiting it during your spa weekend in the Black Forest.

Colmar

The picturesque little town of Colmar will charm you with its half‑timbered houses, canals, flower‑adorned alleyways and culinary diversity. Explore Colmar by water with a boat trip or take the tourist train. The Cigo Tour is particularly recommended for families with children – it takes a playful approach to bringing the town alive for children and makes for a great day out during your family holiday in our family‑friendly hotel in the Black Forest.

Staufen

Johann Georg Faust – immortalised as Dr. Faustus by Goethe – came from this historical little town in Markgräflerland. Follow in the footsteps of Goethe’s Faust with an unusual sightseeing tour or trace the steps of the Devil on the Mephisto Tour.

Triberg Waterfalls

The highest waterfalls in Germany are an extraordinary natural spectacle, with the water rushing down 163 metres into the depths below. Visitors are drawn to Triberg not only for the healing effects of the ionised water but also to see the world’s largest Black Forest cuckoo clock.

Lake Titisee

A day out to Lake Titisee in the Black Forest, one of the cleanest bathing lakes in Germany, is a restorative experience for the whole family. The well‑known lakeside road is lovely for strolling along, and the clear water is wonderful for swimming, windsurfing, sailing or for taking a boat trip with glorious views.

Kaiserstuhl

Enjoy the panoramic views of the vineyards and the idyllic little towns in Kaiserstuhl such as Burkheim, or Endingen with its lovely old town.

Waldkirch

This town at the foot of the Kandel mountain is famous for organ‑making and for sights such as the Kastelburg (castle), but it also offers interaction with animals at the Schwarzwaldzoo (Black Forest Zoo) and adventures on the treetop walk.

Gutach in Kinzigtal

Experience how people lived and worked 400 years ago in the region at the Black Forest Open Air Museum.

Hochburg castle near Sexau/Emmendingen

The medieval Hochburg Ruins are located between Emmendingen and Sexau and are one of the largest castle complexes in Baden. (approx. 15 km | 15 minutes from the hotel)
